Bhrigu / भृगु

  • Maharishi Bhrigu was one of the seven great sages, one of the ten Prajapatis or mind-born sons of Brahma.
  • He was also the patriarch of the Bhrigu family. During the sacrifice of Daksh, Bhrigu was killed by an attendant of Shiva.
  • He was reborn from the seed of Brahma which fell into the sacrificial fire. Bhrigu sprang together with Kavi and Angira from the fire.
  • Bhrigu had two wives. By his first wife Khyati, he had two sons, Dhata and Vidhata and a daughter named Lakshmi.
  • Seven sons were born to Bhrigu of his wife Puloma, viz. Bhut, Chyavana, Vajrashirsh, Kavi, Shuchi, Shukra and Savan.
  • Once, when the sages could not agree which of the three gods of the Trinity was best entitled to worship, they sent Bhrigu to test the temperament of the gods. Bhrigu went first to Brahma. He decided not to show any reverence to the god. Brahma was angry and rebuked him severely, but soon calmed down when Bhrigu apologized. His next visit was to Shiva. Here too, he omitted an obeisance. Shiva was so enraged, that he would have destroyed Bhrigu, had not Bhrigu pacified him with mild words. When Bhrigu visited Vishnu, he was asleep. He woke Vishnu up by kicking him on his chest. Instead of getting furious, Vishnu calmly asked him if his foot was hurting and began to rub it gently. At this, Bhrigu decided that Vishnu was the god entitled to worship by all because he had conquered anger and had the most potent weapon kindness.
