Kalyavan / कालयवन

  • Kalyavan was a king of Yavan kingdom, who wanted to conquer Mathura.

He was Brahman by birth but mallech by deeds. It was Shalya who advised Jarasandh to take help from Kalyavan to defeat Shree Krishna.

Father of Kalyavan

Sage Sheshirayan was father of Kalyavan.He was chief priest of Trigat kingdom. he belongs to family of sage Garga. Once was performing yajna for which he was suppose to remain chaste for 12 years. During this time someone in Kshatriya council referred him as impotent which made him restless. So he decided to have a son who would be unbeatable. He started performing severe penance for Lord Shiva. Lord Siva became happy with his penance and came to Sheshirayan and granted him boon for a son who would not be killed by any weapon neither he would be killed by any suryavanshi or chandravanshi king. Lord Shiva also blessed Sheshirayan to be like a king. After this Sheshirayan was once passing through a jungle when he saw a woman bathing under waterfall. She was apsara Rambha. Both fell in love with each other. Kalyavan was born from this pair. Rambha went back to heaven once her time period was over. Sage Sheshirayan was once again busy with sacrifices and prayers.


  • Then with a fierce army he attacked the Yadavs.
  • Krishna, knowing that he could not kill Kalyavan because of Shiv's boon, decided to use deceit. *When Kalyavan came after him, he pretended fear and ran away from the battle-field. Kalyavan followed him.
  • Krishna ran into a cave, where king Muchukund was sleeping.
  • Kalyavan came running after him and mistaking the sleeping form of Muchukund for Krishna, kicked him.
  • Muchukund woke from his sleep, and in accordance with a boon he had received from Indra, when he looked at Kalyavan, the latter was burnt to ashes.
