Durvasa Ashram / दुर्वासा आश्रम

  • This place lies across the Yamuna one mile north of Vishram Ghat in Mathura. It is Maharishi Durvasa's place of austerities.
  • It was from here that Durvasa crossed the Yamuna on Dvadashi and went to the palace of Ambarish Maharaja in Mathura just when the king was due to break his Ekadashi fast.
  • This pastime has been narrated in detail in Shrimad-Bhagavata (Ninth Canto, Fourth Chapter). Just near the hermitage of Durvasa was the Ashram of Maharishi Parashar.
  • Shri Vyas and other sages and saints would visit Maharishi Parashar there. Close by, on the bank of Yamuna, was the ashram of Dattatrey.
  • The mother of Shri Vyasdev, Satyavati (also known as Matsyagandha), stayed here with her father, the boatman who had raised her.
  • The island on which Krishna-dvaipayana Shri Ved Vyas took birth is nearby in the Yamuna. At Durvasa Ashram, the gopis satisfied Maharishi Durvasa by offering him various kinds of delicious foodstuffs.
  • Today a large and magnificent temple has been built here that is unique in Braj. This temple has deities of Maharishi Durvasa, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Shri Radha-Krishna and Yamuna-devi.
