Trit / त्रित

  • Name of a son of the sage Gautam and brother of Ekat and Dvit.
  • Once, after performing a sacrifice, the three brothers were returning with the cows they had obtained for officiating at the sacrifice.
  • Trit was walking in the front, while Ekat and Dvit were behind, bringing up the animals. The latter two brothers, in order to appropriate his property, were planning to desert him.
  • Walking through a forest, they were attacked by a wolf. Trit ran in fright and fell into a deep well. Ekat and Dvit heard his pleas for help, but ignoring them, they made away with the cattle.
  • Trit did not want to die as he had not yet earned the merit of drinking the Som Juice at a sacrifice. Sitting in the well, he performed a whole sacrifice in his imagination.
  • On the advice of Brihaspati, the gods responded and gave him his share of the Som juice. He was granted many boons and in response to one of them, the river Sarasvati entered the well and Trit was raised aloft on its waters.
  • He returned home and on meeting his brothers cursed them that they would become wolves and bear leopards, bears and apes as offspring.
