• The solar race of kings. It was the first great line of royal dynasties, the progenitor of which was Ikshvaku, son of Manu Vaivasvat and grandson of Surya, the sun-god.
• There were two dynasties of the solar race. The older branch, which reigned at Ayodhya, descended from Ikshvaku through his son Kukshi.
• The solar dynasty reigning at Mithila descended from another son of Ikshvaku named Nimi.
• In Kukshi's race was born Ram. In that of Nimi were born the Janak kings.
